On Sunday, May 5th, we honour the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S). In solidarity with this cause, we asked our team to wear red on Friday, May 3rd, marking our commitment to raising awareness for MMIWG2S.
Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicide victims, and 11% of missing women, yet Indigenous people make up only 4.3% of the population of Canada.
To deepen our understanding, we facilitated an interview-style learning session with Kelly Hawryluk, from Bigstone Cree Nation. Kelly graciously shared personal stories, shedding light on the realities of MMIWG2S, while also guiding us on how JEN COL can actively support Indigenous communities affected by these tragedies.
Across our Indigenous project sites, we displayed Red Dresses and Red Ribbons, symbols of remembrance and solidarity with the Indigenous Nations we collaborate with, who bear the weight of MMIWG2S within their communities.
Together we can make a difference and bring greater awareness to Missing and Murdered Indigenous people in Canada.
