Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Pool at Kinsmen Park

The South Side Pool (renamed Queen Elizabeth Pool in 1939) was the first municipal swimming pool in Western Canada, opening in 1922 with swimming races and novelty events, including apple and bucket races for boys and balloon races for girls. The pool was on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River in what was known as Riverside Park, now Queen Elizabeth Park.

For 82 years, Queen Elizabeth Pool was a popular gathering spot for families and spurred on construction of additional pools in other parts of the city. Due to a crack in the pool’s basin, the facility was closed in 2004. Demolition of the original pool began in 2011 and the new pool opened later that same year. The facility includes a 6-lane pool with a zero-entry zone, a children’s spray park, sun deck, concession, universal change rooms and toilet amenities that serve the pool and the park, as well as spaces for staff, storage and services. Solar panels were also incorporated into the design to provide renewable energy to the facility.

The Sturgeon Lake Health Centre was a partnership between the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Health Canada and JEN COL. This multi-purpose health centre—which serves the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation community—includes a ceremonial healing circle with a 14-foot-long bronze peace pipe statue and a large community health area that can also be used after hours for community functions. In addition, the health centre has a fully functional dental suite and pharmacy, physiotherapy room and several exam/therapy rooms.

JEN COL collaborated with the Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation to ensure opportunities for community members were available and local First Nations labour was utilized wherever possible. In fact, this project was built using 85% local trade and labour from First Nations members. JEN COL hired skilled and unskilled local labour for the duration of the project, allowing a real sense of ownership in the community for their new health centre. Many of the community members who were hired continued to work for JEN COL long after completion of the project.

This project emphasizes JEN COL’s commitment to hiring local First Nations trades and skilled and unskilled labour for projects constructed on First Nations land. It highlights how JEN COL builds strong, lasting relationships with our project team partners and provides opportunities to strengthen business relationships and enhance member self-reliance.

Interior spaces were also extensively renovated and repurposed all while the school remained occupied and operational.
The two-year modernization project began in 2016 and included a new theatre, band room and automotive department, as well as technology upgrades and structural renovations.
